What does it mean to Stay Gold? If you’re familiar with the teen angst story The Outsiders by S.E Hinton and the societal and emotional battles that rage between the Soc’s and Greasers you will instinctively know it’s about living your truth despite what is thrown at you.
The Outsiders was originally published in 1967 and is now a Puffin Modern Classic and in the words of Julia Eccleshare (Puffin Modern Classics series editor):
“The best books grow old gracefully. They retain their importance and affect each new generation as powerfully as the one before.”
I could not agree more having had this story affect me ever since I was thirteen and reading it for the first time in high school English. Throughout my teens I read The Outsiders many more times, always having it pull at threads in my own life living on the margins in government housing with many personal and societal challenges that ran deep.
Despite many challenges growing up I had a fire that burned in me (sometimes it only smoldered but it was always there) telling me that my differences, my challenges and my truth could one day be my biggest gifts. I knew on some soul level that my salvation would always be at my hands knowing that I carry my truth…..and that truth was not determined by someone else.
As life does, it evolves and unravels, and takes on many forms through our formative years into our twenties and beyond. Along that journey we travel different paths, sometimes losing ourselves, sometimes finding ourselves and sometimes going through life changing and shattering stuff.
If you’ve connected with me over the years here, you know I have had my fair share of life changing stuff. But what I want to share is that over the years I have grown to understand that calm and assurance in my life has always come in letting my own personal truth guide me.
For me Stay Gold is about my personal truth not being compromised by others words, thoughts, expectations or inadequacies. We live in a society where there are always people wanting to take away others golden shine.
Those people will try and put you on the margins because your spark unnerves and challenges their grasp on reality. They may tell you you’re crazy, will amount to nothing, go no where in life, are too intense, too passionate, not educated enough and throw so many more labels and accusations at you.
Stay Gold is a reminder that no matter the challenges, no matter your past, no matter where you are in your journey right now, your personal truth will always set you free.
Stay Gold is my life anthem to rise like a golden sun each day, and to shine bright and stay that way, knowing that as I rise others who seek the same light and understanding will rise to meet me.
I live to learn, grow, change, feel and inspire. If by sharing my challenges, my joys, my experiences and my knowledge I can affect those experiences in others lives my life will be made even richer from those rising in their truth to Stay Gold too.
Are you living your truth?
